Children are not adults, and have yet to develop certain skills. [This comment is designed to foster a philosophical discussion rather
than express my personal beliefs - I look forward to your responses.]
Children do not yet have the ability to
make independent choices;
set appropriate long-term goals;
organise their lives to meet the above goals;
control their emotions;
understand the thoughts and behaviour of others.
Children can not be expected to do the right thing unless
they are obedient to adults;
their actions are either rewarded or punished.
It is only when humans become adults are they capable of being masters of their own destinies.

SHORT TERM GAIN LOSES OUT
In my previous posting [bottom of p1] I talked about being paid for lying [it's a hypothetical; don't try it !]. It is an interesting example of where short-term gain would mean that long-term you would NOT gain. Lets say you paid $10 a day for not lying and you did not lie for a month so you get $300. At that point [if not much sooner] the payer would think this person has learnt not to lie and so stop payment. On the other hand, if you chose to lie on random
days throughout the month then you would gain less money in the month [ie., $200 if you lied on 10 days]. But the payer would feel he needs to keep paying because while payments have decreased lying it has not eradicated it. So if you were paid for 2 months would would gain $400 which is $100 more than $300. Hence, going for less money short-term could lead to you earning money long-term.
Obviously, this is a made-up example. Can anyone think of real situations where maximum short-term gain means long-term gaining less ?

doing what adults tell you to (or not)
To go back a bit what if you have some really serious disease of some kind and the only thing that will cure you is if you have your head shaved and two fingers removed? Im being serious here. What if your mum and dad book you in for these things because if you have this done then you are going to get better but you decide its not what you want. What if you decide that you dont want your hair shaved off and your fingers removed. And suppose your already 12 and no your own mind and have thought it all through properly. Should you be made to obey because your told you dont no your own mind? Bets

When do you change from being a baby to a child: 5 years of age
A child to an adult: 18 years of age
An adult to an elderly person? 65 years of age
In my opinion, anyway.

Surely it depends on maturity level

Homeschooler age
Use time age ; & you could talk of them being Year N - like when homeschooled.
