Right Thomas is a tragedy about a 11 year old boy, Thomas. In this excerpt Thomas is on holiday in America with his parents.
IN AMERICA - AT AN OLD FORT
a bus brought us here
I sat next to a boy called Sam
he's 11 like me
Sam had a cool gadget
a little robot crab
it looked like a coin till Sam turned it on
then four tiny legs and a couple of pincers popped out
the crab was radio-controlled by two joy-sticks
one showed the crab where to go
the other operated the pincers
the crab was real easy to move
I made it walk all over me
and Sam got it catching little balls
I wanted to show the crab to Dad
but Sam said I couldn't
he was meant to have left it at home
and Sam had no idea where to buy them
his uncle sent this one from Japan
now at the fort I'm obsessed
any other day the fort would've been cool
there're guns cannons even a skeleton
but all I want is to play with Sam's crab
LUNCH WITH SAM
'you said you'd get the crab out now
all morning you promised to
at least 100 times
but now you won't
'cos your Dad might see it
yet there's no way your Dad can
we're too far away
I'm blocking his view
and the crab's easily hidden if he comes over
why you're such a hedgehog Sam ?
you weren't on the bus'
SITTING ON THE TOILET
what was Sam's crab gear doing here ?
he must have dropped it
wish this crab was mine
no way I can get one in NZ
and if I could it'd cost hundreds of dollars
Mum and Dad'll never spend that on me
will only get a crab if I keep this one
but that's stealing
maybe not
I didn't take the crab off Sam
it was on the floor
could be anyone's crab
so I'm just keeping what I've found
like that $5 Mum and I discovered in the park
better hide the crab
Sam'll think its his
even though he'll have no proof
and Mum and Dad won't understand
my pockets are no good
what about in my shoes ?
saw a guy on TV stick money there once
CHECKING THE CANNONS
'Sam
imagine all these cannons firing at once
the noise will be deafening
smoke everywhere
the cannonballs will rain down on things out at sea - like ships'
got to keep Sam interested
lucky Sam's obsessed with war
then he won't think about his crab
'pffff pffff
the ships'll be sunk'
NEXT TO MUM ON THE BUS - HAVING LEFT THE FORT
soon as we got on the bus Sam wanted his crab
he looked everywhere for it
checking the same place a hundred times
when his parents asked what was wrong Sam started screaming
something about the crab and me stealing it
his Mum tried to calm him down
but Sam only got louder
the driver said we had to get off the bus
so we stood beside it
as our parents talked Sam just cried
not knowing what to do I watched the tears slide down Sam's cheeks
after what seemed an eternity Dad said he'd have to search me
time stood still as I waited for Dad to find the crab
when it wasn't found Sam stormed off
his parents followed
we got back on the bus and sat next to Mum
five minutes later Sam's Dad came and talked to the driver
then he disappeared again
maybe they'd gone to find the crab
what a waste of time when it's in my shoe
Sam was crying heaps when they returned to the bus
and screamed
'I'm not leaving without my crab'
as the door closed
everyone can still hear Sam
he's worse than my little cousin
there's no way Sam deserves the crab
it's only for big boys like me
