LIAR & TELLTRUTH WORDS

Some words just lie. They suggest one meaning but really mean something completely different.

GREENLAND

Must be a country full of grass and other green plants. But no, it is almost completely polar and mountainous ice desert. There is a tiny bit of Artic Tundra on the southern coast (& I bet the tundra isn't even green!).

To make things worse, right next door (sort of) is ICELAND, which is surely a good name for the little Island.

What LIAR WORDS can you find? And is there a closely related TELLTRUTH WORD for each of the words you discover?

Can you think of a good label for LIAR-TELLTRUTH word partners, such as Greenland and Iceland ?

No, but...

No, but I read somewhere that Greenland is called Greenland because when the Vikings discovered it way back when, they used the name as some sort of advertisement to get people to live there. I have no idea why they needed to do this though.

Here's two:

In the Korean football league (the K-League) there is a team named the Chonbuk Motors. I understand that they must come from Chonbuk, but I see their team and all of a sudden they've become humans. Meanwhile, one of heir rivals is Daejon Citizen, which makes sense because the majority citizens of Daejon. Also, there is a brand of ice-cream in America called BICYEA: the Best Ice-Cream You Ever Ate, which isn't true because I've never eaten it. However, Streets is perfectly acceptable as I have seen it being sold on the side of the street.

GREENLAND etc.

GREENLAND

Thanks for your comments, Brian. My mother got me to read COLLAPSE by Jared Diamond. He has a long section on how the Vikings set up a 'colonies' in Greenland around 1000AD. I've just checked it briefly -

Erik the Red(?) was exiled West from Iceland & found green areas at the end of Fiords on Greenland. He returned to Iceland & persuaded settlers to return with him to Greenland. After a few centuries the Viking Colonies collapsed because the colonists were not flexible enough to change their eating from trad. Viking to those more appropriate to nautural Greenland 'food resources' (ie., fish). Assumerly the farming areas were exhausted (ie., became less green) & there were few opportunities to grow edible vegetables.

(AN ASIDE: I think a vegan should go and live in the extreme North & attempt to live (i) without fish or meat & (ii) without importing vegetables fruit etc.)

CHONBUK MOTORS & DAEJON CITIZEN

I guess 'motors' could be metaphorical but it does sound like a carsales yard rather than a soccer team. & if it's anything like the Premier English Soccer League none (or hardly of them) prob. come from Chonbuk!

& I wonder how many of DCs come from D? (guess they all live there now)

BICYEA & STREETS

It obviously should be called BICYCEE - ...... you could ever eat ! Must admit if someone asked me what bicyea was a might think it's a disease !

& with STREETS - if you saw the brand name & knew nothing about the product would you predict it was Ice Cream - I doubt it . So I think never brand name is particularly informative in the way ICELAND clearly labels what you are likely to find in that country.

Liars, All whites All

Liars,
All whites
All blacks

these sport teams dress in almost white and black respectively. The corporate logos ruin the "all" But then again, the "mostly blacks" isn't very catchy

ALL WHITES

I bet the MOSTLY ALL WHITES aren't mostly all white at the end of their games ! Especially when it's been raining. Perhaps their name could change as they get progressively browner . Glad it's not my job to keep their gear looking pristine.

lots of lying animals

Silkworm- Is a caterpillar
Jellyfish- not a fish
Guinea pig- Not a pig
Praerie Dog- not a dog
Titmouse- Is not a mouse
Congo Snake- neither a snake, nor from Congo
Silverfish-is not a fish

'LYING ANIMALS'

A great list - what exactly is a Congo Snake & a titmouse ?
And is it the animals that are lying ? Did they make up their own names ?

When I looked the animals up in my animal encylopedia I found a whole list of animals which started with 'Common', such as the Common Barking Gecko - are there any 'common' species that are nearyl extinct?

On the same page as the Common Barking Gecko there is also the Elegant Sand Gecko !

PAINTED BUTTON-QUAIL

I bet the above animal has never been painted - except perhaps by God ?

The PBQ is a relative of the crane. It is found in Australia (Victoria, NSW & Queensland.

I found one!

I'm not sure but is DISAPPOINTING one? because to appoint some one is to hire them and disappoint doesn't mean you fire them. Also GENTLEMAN isn't a man that is gentle.

DISAPPOINTED & GENTLEMAN

DISAPPEAR = vanish, the opposite of APPEAR

DISHONEST = being untruthful, the opposite of HONEST

DISAPPOINT does seem different, but it doesn't really seem to be lying in the same way that GREENLAND does - because it implies a fact that isn't true.

DISAPPOINT & APPOINT are referring to two apparently separate notions.
If we consider them as unrelated concepts then they could be thought of as partially ORTHOGONALLY RELATED.

Orthogonal means at right angles, and in Experimental Psychology refers to two variables that are unrelated, for example size and colour are orthogonal. The size of a car does not determine it's colour & size.

DISMISS & MISS seem also to be partially orthogonally related. DISMISS means to fire someone but MISS means you have lost something that you were looking for.

GENTLEMAN implies a man who is well-mannered and respectful of others, or simply has a good standing in the community. Such characters are uinlikely to be terrorists etc. - so I wouldn't consider it a LIAR WORD or as orthogonally related to the word it implies.
