Two famous people are chained together when one of them is born in the year the other one dies. Below is a chain lasting slightly more than 250 years. (SEE CHRISTOPHER'S LISTS BELOW - they last 2600 years !)
1756 - 1791 Mozart composer Austrian
1791 - 1871 Charles Babbage mathematician English
1871 - 1942 Alexander Zemlinsky composer Austrian
1942 - John McLaughlin guitarist USA
Chick Corea jazz keyboard USA
Can you extend the chain above ?.
Could you start another chain ?
It should take about 20 people to go back a thousand years.

Sulpitius the Pious, the Bishop of Bourges. And then the records stop.
*Evil laugh*
Sulpitius the Pious
Caleb,
Sulpitius .....has a great sounding name - full of soft short vowels (only hard sound is the pi- in pious, and no a's!). Then you have those 'p's and 'b's and 's's. If I wrote rhythmic humourous poems about history Supitius would be a superb inspiration.
Perhaps historical records are spartan in the period after the sacking of Rome till things started to become civilised again.
Have you seen the new history challenge yet ?

WOW !
What a list Christopher. I never got pass 1756 ! I think we will have to find some harder challenges for you. How about a tree like famous person chain.
At the birth of the most recent person, you find as many people as possible who died that year (like 1937 see above) and then for each of the birthyears you find again as many people as you can etc. I love visual structures !
Or how about a famous person chain where everyone knew each other ? Or worked in the same field? Or a double famous person chain in which there are two people for each part of the chain. For example, 1770-1827 mark the life spans of Ludwig van Beethoven (composer) and George Canning (British statesman).
I think Caleb's going to find matching you a hard challenge. But here's one for you - can you find a second great list in which the first person dies in 2007 and goes back as far as your present one.
But of course, please continue the present list - I wonder how far you can go back?
*sigh*
You've probably beaten me. but I must say, these people aren't exactly famous. famous enough to have maybe a 3 paragraph article in wikipedia, but I've only heard of two of your list. come back when you've got a real famous person chain.
*Evil laugh*
Tsk Tsk Tsk
Caleb, you do not have to try and rubbish other people's chains which are longer than yours.
*sigh* yourself.
*defensive claim*
Hey! alot of mine I never heard of until now. I'm not, good on you for geting back how long? 2600 years. It's just alot of these people probably did not much. I'm trying to find a good, proper chain, you should as well.
*Evil laugh*
Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
I suppose you are right. But it could have seriously been worse. We should try and find a chain (if small) of really famous people. My chain deteriorated, as they all do.
Auf Wiedersehen!
