Word-Hiders

Hatred and father are wordhiders. They are like compound words

COMPOUND                   upstairs Sunday

WORD-HIDERS               hatred (hat + red) father (fat+ her)

In a word-hider, the smaller words do not share meaning with the word-hider itself. Can you make an A to Z list of word-hiders?   It might start attendance ... baton ... carpentry.   For q and x I have only found one word each.

So far, I have discovered over 800 word-hiders.  One of the latest is 'hapaxlegomenon', which is a word that has only one recorded instance (huggermugger is hapaxlegomenon in Shakespear).

Excellent = Excel + Lent
Affectionate = Affect + Ion + Ate

That's all I have right now but for the meantime, I will search for any words from professional essay writing piece and some journals. That's a refreshing ideas to ponder on. keep it coming.

J WORDHIDERS

Well-done Caleb - you've even found a word I haven't heard of .

'Just-ice' reminded me of where I got the idea of 'word-hiders' from.

In the 1980s I was working in a Canadian School. A 7 year old boy asked me why they had 'off ice' written above a door. The door led to the School Office !

'Jackpot' looks like a compound word but my main dictionary lists several meanings of 'jack' and 'pot' that it could be seen as both a word-hider and a compound word.

A jerkin is a sleeveless jacket (which I hadn't heard of). As with 'jack', 'jerk has several meanings, two of which are 'pull hard' and 'idiot'. If you saw a person with a 'jerkin' on you could interpret it as saying 'idiot inside' !
(I'm not sure I'm going to wear my jerkin again!)

'Jammy' does not appear in my dictionary but I can see it could be used as an adjective. The pudding was jammy. How would you use it ?

If a word does not appear in a dictionary I will not add it to my wordhider list. However, a word can be used by thousands of people and not yet be in any dictionaries. (thats why they have to be constantly updated !)

A challenge for you - can you find a word-hider in which the hidden words break up the wordhider in a different way than we say it. For example,

sinking is said 'sink - ing' but breaks up as 'sin' ' king'

Looking forward to reading more of your comments.

Mine is usually one version or another of the concise oxford.
And is onomatopoeia allowed? Because if so, I have solved your challenge with rabbiting (Rabbi+Ting).
Also, I can't seem to find any triple word-hiders like attendance (At+Ten+Dance) except for Abandon (A+Band+on).

What would you call a word like Defence? Not specifically a word-hider but it has a double meaning. Either protection, or removing a fence.

p.s. more words to, add to your list if you don't already have them
Sirloin (Sir+Loin)
Accession (Access+Ion)
Kendo (Ken+Do)
Ketchup (Ketch+up)
Kitten (Kit+Ten)
Knowledge (Know+Ledge)

p.p.s. and all those words and the words they hide are real words. I checked them
